Part 1 - Exploring materials
I've read the first assignment and made notes in the margin to remind myself of my initial ideas and thoughts. I've also written a personal pofile and sent those off.
Making notes on the project material is really helpful, espeically as they are usually instant reactions to what I am reading.
I've looked at the time needed to complete this assignment, which is 110 hours, so I've estimated that if I spend roughtly 2 hours a day on the work, I'm going to need about 2 months to complete it, but I think I can do it sooner, as I have been woking on some ideas on my own before the course materials arrived. I will have to reaccess these and see if they make any sense oR tie in with this assignment questions.
I've decided to complete this course and the Art History level 2 at the same time, so I will have to devote a similar amount of time to that too.
I see that a lot more evaluation and comment is needed from me, so hopefully this will develp my analytical skills too. I know from my own teaching experience that the hardest thing sometimes for a creative person to do is to sit down and write about what they have done! But I am going to do my best to keep this blog up, even if it is just a summary of what I am doing.
It is slightly easier just having two subject to concentrate on this time, rather than three, although this level obvioulsy is harder and in much more depth. It is better though just being able to fully concentrate on the two areas I most enjoy. I like to work in a methodical way, otherwise I'm afraid I will forget something or leave something out.
PROJECT 1 TRADITIONAL MATERIALS
Need to look at traditional materials and how they are marketed, and for whom.
I think I will do a small survey of our local high street and big department store.
Things to look for;
1. what traditionally is made from traditional textiles?
2. who wears them?
3. cost?
4. design?
5. are traditional textiles mass produced or bespoke?
Need some examples of traditional textiles and methods of production. Illustrate in sketchbook.
Started making a sketchbook for this project, by making a mind map and getting some materials I would consider traditional, ie; wool, silk, cotton, (man made) and some synthentic materials, ie viscose, nylon.
I'm just testing some of these for strength, dyeability, weaving, comfort.
will post results later.
